The difference that a painkiller kit can make…
When cart horse Barkha was hit by a tractor, and suffered a deep wound to her hip, her owner, Jeetpal, was frantic. He only had one animal and without her he wouldn’t be able to earn money to feed his family. Brooke vet Dr Brijesh and his team immediately set off to attend to the injured mare after advising Jeetpal to clean the wound and keep ice pressed against it.
After an hour’s drive the team reached Jeetpal’s village and examined Barkha, who was clearly very distressed. Dr Brijesh explained to Jeetpal that as the wound was extremely deep and the hip bone was also injured, Barkha was probably in a lot of pain so he would need to give her a painkiller injection as well as sedating her before beginning treatment. Dr Brijesh then cleaned the area before stitching the wound.
Luckily Barkha recovered well and the Brooke team continued treatment for another month, with antiseptic dressings and oral painkillers. Dr Brijesh also advised Jeetpal to keep Barkha comfortable to reduce her pain and make sure the wound stayed clean to minimise infection.
Barkha is now recuperating well. Her scar is healed and she is beginning to put weight on her injured leg. Jeetpal explained gratefully:
“The Brooke team saved food for our children. I had lost my hope and wondering how I would feed my children without the mare. But the Brooke team made this miracle happens to us. We got back our mare. The Brooke team is an angel for us.”
