The difference a properly maintained harness can make…
Cart horse Elai worked hard for her owner, Khanzada, to earn less than £2 a day to support his nine dependents in the Mulazai community in Pakistan.
However, the poor horse worked every day in agony. An ill-fitting harness, which rubbed against Elai’s skin, had caused several painful wounds on her girth and withers, and she was obviously distressed.
Khanzada could see that his horse was in pain, and when the Brooke mobile vet team made a routine visit to his community, he brought her along for treatment and advice. Dr. Muhammad Shafi and his team immediately took off Elai’s harness to give her instant relief – and then examined the wounds on the horse’s body. After providing treatment to Elai, Dr Muhammad showed Khanzada how to keep the harness clean and well oiled, so it would be comfortable for the horse to wear – and wouldn’t cause rubbing and wounds.
Khanzada listened eagerly and realised that the cause of Elai’s painful wounds was due to the dirty, ill-fitting harness. Gratefully, he promised to always keep Elai’s harness clean and to get it repaired if needed, in order to keep his precious horse comfortable and healthy.
