About Us

The Brooke is one of the UK’s foremost equine charities. It began in 1930 when Mrs Dorothy Brooke saw thousands of ex-cavalry horses sold into a life of hard labour on the streets of Cairo by the British Army after the war. Tormented by their plight, she raised money to buy 5,000 of these tragic animals, and established the 'Old War Horse Memorial Hospital' - a free veterinary clinic for horses, donkeys and mules.

Today the Brooke is an international charity helping over a hundred times that number. With your support, our mobile vet teams and extensive community animal health programme, reach more than half a million working equines a year in some of the world's poorest communities. Through veterinary treatment and training owners how to care for their animals we are helping hardworking animals to have happier, healthier lives.
